Creative Systems Theory

Creative Systems Theory is a comprehensive framework for understanding purpose, change, and interrelationship in human systems. It brings big-picture, long-term perspective to making sense of who we are and why we think and act in the ways that we do. It is pertinent equally to appreciating the past, teasing apart current cultural challenges, and effectively grasping what a vital human future will require of us.

At a practical level, Creative Systems Theory provides powerful tools for making effective choices in both our personal and collective lives. More importantly, it makes an important contributions to the larger history of ideas. It clarifies how, while Modern age institutions, values and ways of thinking have served us well, they cannot be sufficient for the tasks ahead. And it offers a comprehensive approach to understanding that reflects the more mature and encompassing kind of thinking that will be become more and more essential in times ahead.

The concept of Cultural Maturity is a specific notion within Creative Systems Theory and follows from its thinking.

Cultural Maturity

The concept of Cultural Maturity presents a sophisticated guiding framework for making sense of and addressing the core tasks of our time. It provides a no-nonsense, yet compelling general guiding story, one able to get beyond familiar political, religious, and philosophical ideologies. And it goes further to offer detailed theoretical perspective for confronting the critical personal and cultural challenges ahead and separating wheat from chaff with regard to the kind of thinking the future will require.

Needed New Skills and Capacities

Look closely at the most important challenges ahead for the species and we see that they require skills and capacities that before now we could not have fully understood, much less made manifest. The fact that the same new abilities are needed with questions of all sorts provides both guidance for confronting the tasks ahead and important support for the fundamental nature of todays changes. The books Hope and the Future and Cultural Maturity are both organized around these needed new skills and capacities.

Integrative Meta-perspective

Cultural Maturity is much more than a metaphor for what the future asks of us. It reflects critical changes not just in what we think, but how we think, a necessary—and developmentally predicted—cognitive reordering. Creative Systems Theory calls the new vantage for understanding that this reordering produces Integrative Meta-perspective. Integrative Meta-perspective makes it possible to think in ways that are more encompassing—more systemic. It involve both more fully stepping back from our diverse cognitive aspects and more deeply engaging them. Because the understanding that results is more complete, it has the potential also to make us more wise.

Parts Work

Parts Work is a “hands on” method that reliably produces culturally mature perspective. In doing Parts Work, a person engages the various aspects of their cognitive complexity like characters in a play. Parts Work as an approach contributes important new steps forward in psychotherapeutic practice. More conceptually, it provides essential insight into how we understand the nature of identity and also how, ultimately, we best understand understanding itself.
